A "Ground" Hog...climbing a tree...didn't know they did that? Another with a golf ball in with the eggs... Prank? One with a duckling we found abandoned along a stream. Finally, one of some little freeloader nesting in one of our boxes...4 hatches...all flew away today during our check. Great success...still have mama sitting a dozen or so this am...haven't been able to count them as she is always on top. - Col. Robert Shaw

April 21, 2008

Hope you don't mind all these pictures...we are pretty excited today!

We couldn't wait to see if the little ones were hatching today and they are! We knew they were coming up on the 30 day mark. We are up to 20 hatched birds confirmed now and still hatching!

The one picture of Meta holding a duckling I sent yesterday was abandoned by the hen and found by us up on some rocks (waiting to become bait). It was very weak and couldn't hardly hold up it's head. We never did find any of the other ducklings or the hen. We knew we couldn't raise it alone, so we placed it in this other box with the eggs we knew would hatch any day. We just dropped it on top of the hen in the other box and the new Mom adopted it. It is in the center of all of these birds (darker and dryer than the others). Our little experiment seems to have worked for now. Will check tomorrow to see if they are kicked out of the box.

This has been a super weekend for us and the Wood Duck Box project! Regards, Bob and Meta
