Welcome to the MWDI
website and information center!
The
Maryland Wood Duck Initiative (MWDI) is a two-year-old, all-volunteer,
non-profit entity. Our objectives are to enhance Maryland’s wood duck
population and to generate a greater appreciation of the wetland
habitats in which they live by advocating and demonstrating the merits
of a “best practices” approach in managed nest programs.
Much has been accomplished in the field, but your
patience is appreciated while we build our ambitious website, which
will be our “living" administrative center. We hope that it will also
become a valuable resource tool to support our mission as nesting data
accumulates, research matures and as we increasingly develop our Best
Practices' Field Guide in particular.
Our Initiative is a “Marathon, Not a
Sprint.”
It will take years to inventory and
create the data needed for MWDI to fully document every wood duck nest
box in Maryland. At the same time we will become better researchers,
better educators, and better communicators. We will also
use this forum to recruit, train, and develop a skilled network
of volunteers on whom we depend.
Find out How You Can Help
Without a volunteer army to supplement periodic assistance from state
and federal officials, we will be unable to develop and sustain
Maryland's public land nesting programs in a Best Practices mode. If
we are to succeed, it is critical that we leverage the positive
results of these "showcase" projects and our Best Practices Field
Guide extensively across Maryland. If you already have a vested
interest in wood ducks & wetlands, MWDI asks for your cooperation and
participation. Data confidentially is respected. We invite others to
learn more about MWDI and see how we might include your particular
wildlife interest into our activities. Our volunteer opportunities are
extensive. We are active year round and we can customize
a role to fit anyone's schedule.
We recognize and thank our numerous participants,
sponsors, Collaborating Partners, Advisory Board, and especially our current volunteers
for their support. MWDI's progress will also be their success.
MWDI welcomes your continued interest.
Best
Regards,
Cliff Brown
