Director's Message

Wood duck eggs with down

Pre-season activities are well underway. Scheduling is somewhat hectic as we are all volunteers with “day jobs,” but almost all boxes, poles and predator guards have been distributed across Maryland.

Final box assembly by three Eagle Scout projects is almost completed. Work programs are being finalized or initiated and several new projects are being considered. More than 50 public lands projects are expected to be active for this season, up from 41 in 2007 and 25 in 2006. Details will be provided in the next Activity Report.

Most significantly, our volunteer pool is rising especially for ongoing project management that will help sustain and improve upon MWDI’s initial productivity gains achieved during the past 3 years.

MWDI’s ability to utilize the more than 11,000+ volunteer hours invested thus far would not have been possible without the critical support of numerous state, federal and local professionals, operations’ staff and administrators as well as the cooperation and assistance from numerous other non-profit and volunteer organizations which I have listed below in recognition of their support for MWDI’s mission.

Executive Director
Maryland Wood Duck Initiative

The Maryland Wood Duck Initiative is an all-volunteer wildlife conservation effort started in late 2004. Our objectives are to enhance Maryland’s wood duck population and to generate a greater appreciation of the wetland habitats in which they live by advocating and demonstrating the merits of a “best practices” approach in managed nest programs.

Leveraging these focused efforts on the wood duck, we seek to provide a Total Wetlands Experience for our volunteers and the “next generation” through the development of complementary educational programs, internships and research projects.
