The 15th Maryland
Envirothon, a state-wide high school environmental and wildlife
competition sponsored by the Natural Resource Conservation Service
and assisted by Maryland’s Department of Natural Resources, provided
funding for 40 wood duck boxes and assembled 30 of them June 19 at
the University of Maryland Eastern Shore in Princes Anne. More than
100 teenagers and their coaches participated in the sessions which
were conducted on the first evening of the competition as a social
“ice-breaker”. |

Aaron Ward and Chris McCabe from
the Maryland Waterfowler’s Association assisted MWDI’s Cliff Brown
in supervising the event, as did Jim Mullan, Doug Wigfield and Craig
Hartstock from the Wildlife & Heritage Service of Maryland’s DNR.
Things were a bit hectic with the necessarily compressed time frame
but the kids seemed to have a great time swinging the hammers and
then autographing the boxes with some unique drawings. Our thanks to
all those who sponsored and assisted in the event and, especially,
for including MWDI. The boxes will be put to good use. |
