Hats Off to Scott Jasion and Greg Raymond!

On May 2nd, MWDI hosted a youth box assembly booth where 20 kids assembled and decorated quite elaborately 20 cypress wood duck boxes that will be used for the 2010 nesting season. The event was held at the 28th Annual Havre De Grace Decoy & Wildlife Art Festival sponsored by the Decoy Museum and in association with Delta Waterfowl’s “Waterfowler Days” Exhibition. Delta has been a strong supporter of MWDI’s activities and funded the lumber for these kits and boxes.

MWDI volunteers, Scott Jasion and Greg Raymond assisted Cliff Brown mentoring the kids who, as you can see, enjoy the post assembly graphics as much as using the hammers and drills!

Upcoming MWDI 2009 youth assembly events are planned for:

  • August 16th - Bass Pro’s Arundel Mills store

  • September – MD DNR’s Annual Hunting & Fishing Day (Bridgeton)

  • October – The Chesterown Wildlife Exhibition & Sale (Chestertown)

Previously, Maret High School students (Washington, DC) assembled 33 boxes in February for their community service day.

If you have an organization or exhibition where you might like MWDI to host a youth box assembly event, we can try to accommodate you. As MWDI solicits no dues or direct funding, our box assembly events are now limited to organizations that fund the lumber purchase several months in advance when we place our annual order.

MWDI’s 2009 cost was $21 per box kit. MWDI retains the boxes for use in its statewide public lands nesting program.
