Chestertown Wildlife Exhibition & Sale
A Major Supporter of MWDI
Financial Donations & Volunteers
Making a Difference in Kent County
The Chestertown Wildlife Exhibition & Sale (CWE&S) was one of
MWDI's initial supporters as the initiative got started in Kent
County in late 2004. CWE&S funded the major renovation of the
Eastern Neck, Chesapeake Farms and Radcliffe Creek Middle School
programs. CWE&S continues to support the ongoing maintenance of
all Kent County projects. MWDI has hosted a youth box building
event each fall and will be present at this Saturday's event
(October 17, 2009).
Kent County's public wood duck program has grown from 75 boxes
of varying condition in 2004 to 219 high quality structures this
past season. The use of "best practices" has resulted in a
production increase of more than 4,400 ducklings over
pre-MWDI production levels during the past 5 nest seasons.
Annual production peaked at 1,342 ducklings in
2007. Drought-like conditions have hampered production since
then and fewer returning hens were also observed in the 2009
season when 1,097 ducklings were hatched. However, when more
favorable conditions return, further production gains are
anticipated.

As a further direct result of MWDI's efforts and CWE&S' support,
many private nesting program sponsors in Kent have now expanded
their programs and adopted a "best practices" resource
management approach. The collective impact of these productivity
gains is believed to be at least equal and probably exceeds that
obtained from MWDI's public projects. |
